Nearly all the Native
American peoples of North America revered the bear, referring to
it as "Grandfather" or "Grandmother." Some tribes
hunted it for its meat, hides and claws, or to display skill and
bravery. Others, however, refused to eat bear meat, feeling it was
akin to cannibalism. When Euro-Americans arrived in Yellowstone
in the early 1800’s, the Crow, Blackfeet, and Shoshone were living
in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. |
