Ranger gives visitors a walking tour whild two black bears stand only a few feet away. Established in 1872, Yellowstone National Park drew approximately 10,000 visitors in its first ten years. The few regulations that did exist for the protection of bears and other wildlife were often ignored. Although some accounts suggest that the grizzly and black bear populations of Yellowstone were substantially reduced during these early years, they were still considered relatively numerous.
