In 1886, a new era of stewardship dawned for Yellowstone. Congress brought in the United States Cavalry to protect and administer the young park. The cavalry began enforcing an 1883 prohibition of hunting within the park; and wildlife, especially bears, quickly began to lose their wariness of humans.
