Thanks for your question, Sky. The fires of 1988 were much more extensive than this fire season's-for instance, in 1988, approximately 850,000 acres burned, versus about 15,000 this year. The weather of Fire Season 2002 was much cooler, wetter and less windy. For most of the 2002 season, the fires were suppressed. In 1988 the natural fire policy was in effect which allowed lightning started fires to burn up until mid July. This year (to date) there were no human caused fires, while in 1988, the largest burn was due to human carelessness.
